Back to the plan

Arhus - Fjellerup Strand 44.55 km

Ahh, another "luxury" night in the hostel. The breakfast was very nice with selfmade bread rolls, delicious! We decided that we don't want to skip the peninsula we originally had planned to go along, and to catch up with the last campground booking we had for today, we took the light train/tram from Arhus to Grenaa.

Grenaa.
The biking path is now called Östkystruten and today led us partly inland, partly along the beach, a good mixture of landscapes and wind.

On a nice quiet road surrounded by wheat fields.

We stopped at the Sostrup castle and monastery which are nowadays used as a hotel. A nice little getaway.

Sostrup Castle.

The last stretch of the path was a sand path right along the beach - beautiful!

The beach we see from our tent.

After arrival we now try to establish the routine of a stretching/yoga session to cool down and thank our body for the biking day. Another thank you (or not) was that our dinner today consisted of a huge selfmade waffle with a huge portion of ice cream inside :D It was indeed a little bit too big maybe, hehe, but we couldn't resist.

When plans change

Nykøbing Sjælland - Arhus 34.29 km

Even though the night was rainy and windy the morning was at least partly sunny and dry. The plan was to go about 30 kms to the ferry and then cross over to Ebeltoft and go another 20 kms to the campground after that. It turned out a bit differently...

"Our" beach in the morning.

I unfortunately had to bike with a migraine today which was really not easy. But we made it with struggles against the strong winds, partly on the main road, and got to the harbour. Only that they told us that the ferry we planned to take only goes on the weekends... :D It's not that we didn't check the website before, but it was apparently not that easy to figure out in Danish. So, change of plans, we went to Arhus instead. Still the same peninsula (Jutland), just a bit different harbour than expected. Luckily I felt much better after taking a nap on the ferry while Marlen and Lur tried to figure out an accommodation for the night. We now stay in a nice hostel right in the city centre and try to still go up towards the north during the next days.

Arhus welcomed us with a tiny bit of rain, but amazing Thai dinner and night views.

Crossing the Isefjord

Helsinge - Nykøbing Sjælland 56.70 km

We woke up to sunshine after a rainy night. Lur felt already better than yesterday, and so we started our cycling day altogether. First along some fields, a small winery and cheese place, and then going along a lake towards the beach.

Growing wine in Denmark, I was surprised!

Tisvildeleje beach.

After that the way went all along the coast to catch the ferry that crosses the Isefjord. Bikes are actually allowed to cross for free in July.

The campground tonight is right on the beach. We came right at the time for sunset and a rain shower.

Super beautiful spot and timing :)

Unexpected start of the trio

Copenhagen Charlottenlundfort - Helsinge 64.00 km

This was indeed an unexpected start of the biking tour together. Lur didn't feel well at all during the first camping night and neither during the day, so we had to change plans a bit. First, we visited Lyngby and its outdoor shops to buy proper camping gear for Lur, and then she went by train to Hilleröd, the closest town to our next campground. In the meantime, Marlen and me biked all the way plus took the beach route, of course ;)

A grotto along the way.

An ice cream a day keeps the doctor away ;)

In Hilleröd we met Lur again and saw a little bit of the huge and impressive Frederiksborg castle.

Tonight we're staying at a nature campground with lots of outdoor activities and fireplaces. Luckily we could altogether make the last 10 kms together.

Here's another link to the Google map I've created as the last one didn't show the most up to date version.

Good night!

Copenhagen rest day

Copenhagen Nörrebro - Copenhagen Charlottenlundfort 14.81 km

It was really nice to have a little rest day today. We slept long, had a relaxed and delicious brunch and then biked without luggage to the city centre to walk around the city Hall, shopping street and Nyhavn.

City Hall.

Royal theatre.

Nyhavn.

Then we got ready for the first kms out of the city, first time packing for the girls :)

Rainbow after a little shower.

Camping in a fort next to some canons tonight.

Hello Denmark

Trelleborg - Copenhagen 49.55 km

It was a stormy night, but after waking up it was so nice and sunny outside that I had to go for a morning swim :)

Camping right next to the beach.

The few kms until Malmö were very enjoyable and without wind today. Instead it was really warm and sunny.

Cuties on the way.

View after an uphill.

The Öresund Bridge from Malmö to Copenhagen.

Impressions of Malmö.

In Malmö I even found a new bike computer which I will need to install tomorrow (wasn't the easiest quest, but I found one). Then the big crossing with the Öresund train over the bridge, with border control at Copenhagen Airport. The border control was very relaxed, and then I went the way to Copenhagen Central Station still by train to the find my friends Lur and Marlen in the city of Copenhagen. Reunion :)

Jiii, we all made it!

Together we explored a bit more of Copenhagen and went to Christiania. I had my bike with me, of course. We can recommend the hemp beer.

There are some beautiful (church) towers in the city.

Following a friend's recommendation we even managed to try typical Danish food, lots of meat. I had fish and it was also delicious.

The Airbnb is a cute place in Nörrebro with a funny shower on top of the toilet in a tiny bathroom. Tomorrow we explore the city a bit more and in the evening go to the first campground and start our 2-week round trip through Denmark. The plan is to go up north all the way to Skågen and then come back.

Last day alone for now

Ystad - Trelleborg 56.68 km

Phew what a day. It felt really exhausting, even though the distance might not look that huge compared to some other days. But first, my bike computer stopped working yesterday and even with a battery replacement did not want to work, so the distance is now measured by the map. Second, I had to pack the tent in the rain in the morning which is never so nice. Luckily after a while it stopped raining and was "only" windy.

A little stopover in Ystad for matcha latte, battery and marabou shopping, and ice cream, and then I continued my way along the beach. To distract myself from the wind, I listened to some music and sang along, my own bike karaoke :D

Ystad.

Sun and beach :)

I also visited the southernmost village in Sweden today: Smygehuk. Waving toward the island of Rügen in Germany :)

Smygehuk.

In Trelleborg was already dinner time and sunset.

Trelleborg.

To the ferry to Germany, but I didn't take the shortcut ;)

I found a spot right next to the water in the dunes, but it is indeed still very windy. Hopefully tomorrow I get to Malmö in time to take the train to Copenhagen from there. Lur and Marlen are already there waiting :) See you tomorrow!
